Record 8.6 billion dollar poker machine losses

NSW's poker machine losses have surged to a record $8.64 billion in 2024, marking a 6.3% increase from last year. This isn't just a statistic—it's a devastating blow to families, local economies, and vulnerable individuals across our communities.

Despite the government's 2023 reforms, including lower cash input limits and restrictions on gambling signage, the reality is clear: these measures have failed to curb the harm. The gambling industry continues to thrive while problem gambling rates soar, particularly in rural areas where support services are scarce.

I have long pushed for stronger poker machine reform, including a mandatory cashless gambling card to increase accountability and prevent money laundering. Powering down poker machines between midnight and 10 a.m. is another straightforward step that could provide immediate relief and help reduce gambling-related harm.

The NSW Government must stop bowing to gambling industry interests and start prioritizing community welfare. We need real reform—not watered-down policies that do nothing to stop billions from being drained from our communities every year.
